Qoute of the moment

To make a mask is an arduous task. It involves choosing an impressive subject, visualising it clearly, planning the manner or its execution, and then plunging into laborious and complicated work, bristling always with new problems. Mask-making is a peculiar kind of sculpture where one must at the same time consider the aesthetic and the practical side of it, the exterior and the interior of the mask, the character it is intended to represent, and the fitting to the head of the wearer. One must also remember to make the mask as thin as possible, and yet strong and durable.

Mask and Clown Intensive
with Aole T Miller & Andrew Cory

27 - 29 June, 2008

10 am – 4 pm daily @ Metro Arts

Cost: $230/$180 (conc)

This three day workshop will focus on the physical, emotional and imaginative qualities of mask work and contemporary clowning and their application to the actor/performer. This workshop is for actors, performers, dancers of all experience levels who wish to: · deepen their expressive physical and vocal potential

· tap into their innate playfulness

· understand the actor's imagination and the 'energy' it creates

· experience the truth and authenticity of deep character transformation

The idea of using masks in actor's training is to give the actor a deep experience of the body and to unlock the creativity of the physical body and its inspiration. A freedom and release of the body and voice will result in using masks over the 3 workshop days. Mask work also helps actors find an experience of working from the character's ego without the actor's personal judgments getting in the way.

With the aid of clowning, the mask work will be incorporated to extend the actor's imagination beyond average pedestrian and predictable choices. Contemporary clowning is not about face paint or big shoes – it's about finding a unique character within that delights in the laughter, chaos and lunacy of being human. Clowning will ignite the participants' playfulness whilst at the same time emphasizing the importance of a generous stage presence and a rich humanity.
