Harlequin Unmasked: The Commedia dell'Arte and Porcelain Sculpture

Category : COMMEDIA dell?ARTE
Author : Meredith Chilton
ISBN : 0300090099
|

|
Description : The commedia dell'arte began in Italy as irreverent, improvised street theatre and is best known for its exuberant characters--Harlequin, Pantalone, Pulcinella, Scaramouche, and Colombine, among others. Since the sixteenth century, these personalities have inspired paintings, engravings, and porcelain sculptures. Encompassing theatre, court culture, masquerades, and the decorative arts, this splendidly illustrated and engaging book offers original perspectives on porcelain commedia figures while also making an important contribution to the study of the commedia dell'arte. The volume focuses on nearly 150 porcelain sculptures as it tells the story of the commedia dell'arte's transformation into sculpture: Why were the figures made? Why do they appear as they do? What inspired their gestures and costumes? How did street theatre themes become integrated into court life and entertainment? Examining these delightful porcelain figures in greater breadth and detail than ever before, this book is essential for those interested in theatre, painting, costume, and the decorative arts.

Scenarios of the Commedia Dell'Arte

Category : COMMEDIA dell?ARTE
Author : Flaminio Scala
ISBN : 0879101334
|

|
Description : "Scenarios of the Commedia Dell'Arte" is a repository of Commedia dell'Arte scenarios (or "canovacci") written by Flaminio Scala in 1611, if my memory is correct. For the serious Commedia student, this resource is essential. It was only released in hardcover, then went out of print. The fact that it is now available again as a budget friendly paperback attests to the growing interest in this form of historical theatre.

Lazzi: The Comic Routines of the Commedia Dell'Arte

Category : COMMEDIA dell?ARTE
Author : Mel Gordon (Editor)
ISBN : 0933826699
|

|
Description : A reader from Birmingham, AL
Of all the books out there concerning commedia dell'arte, I found this one to be one of the most informative and useful (and definitely the FUNNIEST!--and isn't that the point?). Mel Gordon clearly and concisely defines what lazzi are, and presents a series of them according to type; quite appropriate, considering commedia performers often kept notebooks full of such routines. One discovers that comedy has not really changed over the centuries. Perusal of these routines brings the tradition of commedia dell'arte to life in a way that hours of poring over Flaminio Scala's work can not. A must for any student of the Italian comedy!

Performance and Literature in the Commedia Dell'Arte

Category : COMMEDIA dell?ARTE
Author : Robert Henke
ISBN : 0521643244
|

|
Description : This book explores the commedia dell'arte: the Italian professional theatre in Shakespeare's time. The actors of this theatre usually did not perform from scripted drama but improvised their performances from a shared plot and thorough knowledge of individual character roles. Robert Henke closely considers hitherto unexamined commedia dell'arte texts to demonstrate how the spoken word and written literature were fruitfully combined in performance. Henke examines a number of primary sources including performance accounts, actors' contracts, letters, popular poems, memorials of deceased actors, scenarios, and printed plays, among other documents. Henke analyzes the character system in the commedia dell'arte, individual roles, Venetian buffoni, and provides detailed case studies of early actors and actresses. While previous studies have concentrated on either the oral or the literary aspects of commedia dell'arte, this is the first book to consider how these two elements might have worked together to create this rich and fascinating theatre.
