Paper Mache is an extremely versatile art-form that is also eco-friendly and affordable. Masks, puppets, sculptures, lighting fixtures - even furniture! If you can think of it, you can build it from paper mache. From the ancient Egyptians to the Victorians and beyond, artists and craftsmen through history have mastered this art form to create fantastic pieces that are ornamental, original and even functional.

I was approached by a large international advertising agency to commission me to make three masks to represent things people are allergic to for a campaign to promote an anti-allergy medication. Working from their rough sketched I came up with 3 designs that they approved. Working very hard I made all the masks in less than a week and delivered them on time. They were very pleased with the results and so was I. Have a look and see what you think.

10 masks and info from Enki

Since childhood I've always been fascinated by masks and all the mystique that surrounds them. I made my first mask out of paper-mâché using strips of newspapers onto a positive form when I was 8 years old. I made simple masks here-and-there throughout my childhood but never attempted to take it "to the next level".
In 2003 I decided to take mask making on as a more serious hobby of mine. Since then I've evolved my mask making methods to the Venetian method of using carta lana (wool paper) in a negative plaster mold.
I've made masks by commission for people from many places around world. Mask making continues to be an important hobby of mine to this day (2011)."artist: William Tian

The board has decided to end it's efforts to organize a second international mask festival on Aeroe, Denmark.
It's a sad day for Ærø / Aeroe and the world but the financial situation is horrible at the moment as many art event makers know.

The website will stay on line for a long time as a historical document - and we hope you will find some inspiration form the great event.

Visiting Cuba was a wonderful experience of meeting masks makers and their art. In Cienfuegos I met this artist who uses pyrography to create his masks.
His name is Yoel Felipe Leon Armas and he lives in the village Abreus in the province of Cienfuegos.
He does not have a web gallery or email access but you can find his booth in the central square in Cienfuegos.
Here are photos of him and his art.
