Grafton ARTSFEST was born of a dream to present to the community one of the best cultural experiences one could enjoy in Australia and now, eleven years down the track, that dream has been achieved. Artsfest is now held twice a year offering in Autumn a visual arts festival at which a variety of four-day workshops are held, then in Spring some fifty workshops in all forms of the arts make up the program. Every evening some form of social gathering, be it a concert or exhibition, allows the interaction of tutors and students. If you have a creative mind, then Artsfest has something to either begin exploring that desire or expand your talents, and you will be taught by Australia?s leading artists in their chosen fields of the arts. Tutors are carefully selected not only for their art, but also more importantly for their ability to pass on their expertise to their students. Grafton Artsfest is a cultural event open to people who want to enhance and enjoy their creative abilities, gain knowledge and expertise in a field of visual or performing art and explore new ideas in a convivial atmosphere. It aims to provide an affordable four or six days of cultural activities which would not otherwise be available. Artsfest is a non-profit incorporated body supported by local businesses and organizations. The committee believes that Artsfest is an important way of bringing the arts, audiences and whole communities together. It gives communities a creative focus, helps celebrate achievements and forge community identity, and is of significant assistance in generating increased tourism. Grafton City is situated 360 kilometres south of Brisbane and 670 kilometres north from Sydney New South Wales, Australia. The city is bisected by the Clarence River and was declared a city in 1855.The rich legacy of early colonial buildings, carefully preserved, make the city a major interest to the visitor. Grafton is easily accessible with air, rail and road services and an hour?s drive will take you one to of the many beaches, national parks and other scenic attractions.

Since 1974 The May Day Parade and Festival has been an annual spectacle at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, MN. Created by In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre with the involvement of the community, it draws together thousands of people every year to celebrate the arrival of spring. In the weeks prior to the first Sunday in May the old Avalon Theatre on Lake Street becomes a huge puppet workshop. Families from the surrounding area, interns from around the world and friends from the neighborhood gather for the workshops and planning sessions. They come together to construct figures, costumes and floats and to develop the themes of the parade which will proceed down Bloomington Avenue to the park on that climactic Sunday.

Since opening in West Liberty, Owl Glass Puppetry Center has made a tradition of building giant puppets for the annual fair parade. Held on a Sunday afternoon in mid-July (usually the hottest day of the year!), the parade heralds the opening of the Muscatine County Fair and is followed by a community-wide picnic in the park. Everyone in town watches this classic Midwestern parade; everyone, that is, except for the many that participate by entering floats, horses, tractors, and....puppets!

Misleadingly billed as "The First Ever Gathering of Giants" the Yeovil Scrapstore did produce a good turnout of giant puppets on 22nd July 2000. The event took place at Yeovil Showground, an unfortunate choice of venue as it's hilltop position left it exposed to the brisk south-easterly breeze and the uneven grassed slopes hampered the participants.

On the fourth weekend of August, the "Ducasse" festivities take place in Ath's historical centre. For a few days, the whole town is vibrant with enthusiasm for its traditions and folklore. On Saturday, after Goliath's wedding, the giant fights against the shepherd boy David. On Sunday, there is a procession with several giants, floats and picturesque groups going through the streets of the city. This medieval tradition has become more and more attractive. Ath's inhabitants proudly take part in the historic and folkloric procession. After the vespers of Saturday, everybody eats a piece of the local and tasty "Masteilles" tart.

Adding to the festivities at the Punch & Judy Faire and providing a dramatic finale to the week of workshops, activities and performances was the Giant Puppet Parade. Led by drummers and puppeteers from Mali, Africa the parade meandered on a long journey over the grounds of the beautiful University of Washington campus.

The International Mask Dance Festival was first held in Andong in 1997. That first festival was just a small little thing, one long weekend in length, and though it featured some of the most famous traditional performers in Korea (such as Kim Duk-soo and Ahn Sook-sun) it was nothing compared to the well organized, incredibly fascinating spectacle put on this year. Through trial and error the Mask Dance Festival has now emerged in my opinion as one of the most memorable, fascinating and fun times to be had in Korea. Now featuring a permanent stage area, with a state of the art sound system and bathrooms with paper towels in them (gasp), the most interesting sites are not always on the stage.

PRE-CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS Carnival originated from pre-Christian traditions of the peasantry of Europe and other continents. Peasants live intimately with nature. They depend on good weather for good harvests. They rejoice when they reap abundantly. That's why they tried to influence the insecure factors affecting their crops by means of ceremonies and rituals.......
