In streaming rainbows of color, people wearing traditional Korean clothes (hanbok) burst onto streets. Even the most stoic, serious-minded Korean beams with joy. Koreans usher in the Lunar New Year (sul-nahl) in the bosom of their families. It is the day when people visit and honor the elders of the extended household. Younger family members bow repeatedly in deference to their elders, while the elders often give out envelopes containing gifts of money, that are then dutifully tucked away into small traditional purses.

A Kim Myong Hee Project "My current work deals with using hand made paper to create life masks of people from all walks of life and all ages. These paper masks are then assembled into murals of varying shapes and sizes. The work is an attempt at finding the real human face beneath the many "faces" all of us use each day. The assembled murals demonstrate both the similarities and differences among people and yet move toward an expression of universal harmony that accentuates a certain shared spirit which dwells within us all." - Kim Myong Hee

The town of San Francisco celebrations are relatively young, if compared to Venezia or Rio de Janeiro, but nevertheless its energy it's there to make performers and public vibrate. Parade is always the 4th Sunday of May or Memorial Weekend (thus disconnected from the catholic traditions), the parade lasts one day only and begins at Bryant & 24th at 10am. Then it heads down the Mission Street to 15th where the parade dissolves in beer and more dancing. The show continues until 6pm. Of course the celebration goes on privately after hours, but that's another story

In English - updated version with fotos "The carnival festivities have strong roots in the Opatija region. Their origin is from the time when the key persons were the Zvon?ari, people who, at the beginning of February, dressed in skins of wild animal, wore colourful hats and had cowbells tied to their body. they would go out in the forests in groups to scare out the turkish soldiers, which dates the events to somewhere about 1511, when the last battle took place in this territory."

Since 1974 The May Day Parade and Festival has been an annual spectacle at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, MN. Created by In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre with the involvement of the community, it draws together thousands of people every year to celebrate the arrival of spring. In the weeks prior to the first Sunday in May the old Avalon Theatre on Lake Street becomes a huge puppet workshop. Families from the surrounding area, interns from around the world and friends from the neighborhood gather for the workshops and planning sessions. They come together to construct figures, costumes and floats and to develop the themes of the parade which will proceed down Bloomington Avenue to the park on that climactic Sunday.
