The Mask Project invites people to use their talents to benefit our community's terminally ill and their families served by Hospice of Metro Denver and other community programs. Celebrities from across the nation have once again embraced the project, creating colorful, unique pieces of art. The 2002 collection of 500 hand-painted masks run the gamut from self-portraits and patriotic tributes to a three hundred pound, five-foot sculpture. Each mask is filled with a story, a memory or a vision. This year's exhibit has several repeat performers including Glenn Close, Elizabeth Dole and Donald Trump, and many others who are making their debut. Our headquarters are on Bainbridge Island, the onetime home of legendary Suquamish leader Chief Seattle. He is buried one mile north of Bainbridge Island in the town of Suquamish on the Port Madison Reservation, the home of his people, the Suquamish Indian Nation. Bainbridge Island and Suquamish are west of the city of Seattle on Puget Sound in the state of Washington--a state named in honor of another great American leader.

Many wonderful samples here. "The Guatemalan Dance mask is an iconographic symbol that represents the many facets of Guatemala's unique history and culture. The earliest traditional masks and costumes, rooted in ancient Mayan culture, represent Pre-Hispanic civilization and beliefs. These dances include the "Palo Volador," in which two Monkeys and angels climb a post and subsequently wind themselves around; a traditional dance which honors Santo Tomas, the Patron of Chichicastenango...."

A selection of masks from various cultures in Mexico and Latin America. Traditional use of masks in these cultures is for ceremonial purposes as well as decoration. We do not have any masks at this time that have actually been used in ceremonies or dances but our masks are all authentic and carved by the the indigenous people who use them.
