Following a long established stage tradition, film actors would often sit for "lifecasts" or Life Masks, where their faces or whole heads would be covered in plaster, creating an exact negative image that could be used to make positive castings, or Life Masks. It was these Life Masks that "stood in" for the actors in the make up development.

Many wonderful samples here. "The Guatemalan Dance mask is an iconographic symbol that represents the many facets of Guatemala's unique history and culture. The earliest traditional masks and costumes, rooted in ancient Mayan culture, represent Pre-Hispanic civilization and beliefs. These dances include the "Palo Volador," in which two Monkeys and angels climb a post and subsequently wind themselves around; a traditional dance which honors Santo Tomas, the Patron of Chichicastenango...."

We acquired the 70 plus African masks during several years of living in Western and Central African countries prior to 1986. We wish to market the entire collection, or, alternatively, ethnic groupings that may be of interest to individual collectors. Most of the masks were made in Zaire (Kuba, Pende, Salampasu, Songye, Tshokwe, Yaka, Suku, etc.). Eight of the masks are rare Kom pieces from Cameroon. Masks from Mali, Liberia, Angola and Ivory Coast are also included. The masks which we consider art objects were created for specific utilitarian purposes, as tools to facilitate cultural functions -initiation into adulthood and secret societies, ancestor worship, births, deaths, law enforcement, fertility and agricultural rites, healing and exorcism, etc. Sadly, most African countries which do have museums are without resources to preserve them. The effects of termites, fungi and other pathogens can be seen on many masks.

In festivals and ceremonies around the world, people use masks to express their beliefs about the realm of the supernatural. Masks are used in a variety of rituals; to personify spirits, gods or ancestors; to maintain social control; to heal; to educate; and to mark rites of passage. In celebration of the global diversity of masks and related traditions, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History presents Spirit of the Mask from May 24 through July 28. The exhibit features 95 masks from five continents, 40 countries and nearly a dozen Native American tribes. They date from the early 1900s to 1998.
