In the Summer term 2001, we held a whole school art exhibition. Children's art work was displayed in classrooms and around the school, and parents and visitors were invited to look round. In the hall, we arranged to have a framed piece of art by every child on display - parents were able to purchase, for a small fee, their own child's art work.

You Will Need / Making the Masks / Using the Masks / Scenarios I use this exercise with my fourth-graders when they study Ancient Greece in Social Studies. Naturally we discuss Greek Theatre, and one of the most interesting characteristics of this form is the fact that the actors were masked. For this reason it seems natural to introduce mask work at this time, and to relate it to the Greeks. However, mask work can be used at any time in a drama curriculum, and can be just as easily tied to any of several other historical forms, including Commedia. The masks used in this lesson plan are designed to be simple to make. (They can be made in the drama classroom, ordinarily in a single period and without the help of the visual art teacher.) However, if you have more time or an art teacher who wants to get involved, there is no reason you shouldn't make more solid or elaborate masks........ Matt Buchanan

Thursday March 1 and Thursday April 12 LENTEN TRANSFORMATIONS Workshops for those wanting to be creative -- and wanting to help others be creative -- with the spiritual quest through Lent. Teodoro and Esther Dragonieri are world-renowned artists who connect the creative process with Christian spirituality using masks to explore deep questions such as those posed at Lent. (1) Mystery of the Mask [March 1] The use of masks has always been a spiritual act. Traditionally, for instance, Carnival ran from immediately following Christmas to its climax just before Ash Wednesday, on the threshold to Lent. In this workshop you will be introduced to the historical and theological significance of masks. While exploring the spirit of Carnival you will also create your own mask. Cost: $85. [$90. after Feb. 8] (2) Power of the Mask [April 12] Masks are experiencing a revival in western civilization because no other inanimate object is so universally successful in riveting the attention, stimulating the imagination and arousing deep emotions. Bring your Lenten time to a close and prepare for Easter by exploring the transformational power of playing with Commedia dell'Arte and Neutral Masks. Commedia dell'Arte was a popular form of improvised street theatre which originated in Italy in the 16th century and subsequently influenced Shakespeare, Moliere and others. Explore your imagination with a series of exercises, games, meditations and discussions. (Comfortable clothing is recommended.)

Shamanic Theatre can be about masks, dance, ritual, storytelling, improvisational theatre, visualization, and the poem made visible...there are marvelous, playful personas within each of us that bring vitality and renewal. And there are neglected "shadow" aspects of self that ask to be known and healed. "Giving them voice" within sacred theatre can provide opportunities for change and integration. Ceremony is a primal, participatory artform. Through creative Ceremony, we can celebrate joyful occasions, create Rites of Passage for important transitions, and release what has passed from our lives - and most importantly, attune to the greater Circles of life upon our magnificent Mother Earth. Lauren Raine offers a variety of "Co-creative" Workshops for groups, and also delights in assisting others to create Ceremonial Events and Rites of Passage. She also offers courses in the Craft of Maskmaking for artists

The Masked Journey with Dr. Peggy Hunt and Bea Joy Borden July 12-14 The Masked Journey with Dr. Peggy Hunt and Bea Joy Borden July 12-14 The Shaman and The Mask have been associated for millennia. Mask dancing, visions, songs and storytelling have traditionally been important components of the ceremonial life of our ancestors. Masks representing animals, nature spirits, deities and aspects of the human experience have been used in cultures throughout the world. The mask can be a powerful instrument of transformation. The Masked Journey weekend workshop is a multi-dimmensional workshop. It is about spiritual healing, creativity, expression, and receiving our highest good. We will combine mask-making, ritual, and journeying with our spirit guides to discover creative solutions to present challenges in our lives. In this workshop we will use percussion instruments (drums, rattles, click sticks), toning and other vocal sounds in rituals of transformation. We will ask for a vision of a personal mask, and will then make the masks. We will drum and dance and journey for a personal ritual to be shown in detail how your mask is to be decorated and used. On Sunday afternoon, we will do the Power Dance of The Masks. Cost of this weekend: $285.00
