This shaman's mask is an exquisite example of old Nepali workmanship. It has seen much use and still shows traces of green, white and red pigments. The surface has an incredible dark patina. The human hair beard and mustache were attached with pieces of old canvas and leather. There is a native repair to a stress crack in the forehead. Old masks of this quality are no longer available in the field. This one came from a Spanish collection

3 photos These ogoh-ogoh paraded, along with about 20 others, in Ubud on New Year's Eve, 2001. Balinese New Year's Day is calculated according to the lunar calendar and was on 25 March 2001. The parade begins at the south end of Monkey Forest Road and travels the whole length of the road to the main Ubud crossroads. It is an exciting time. In Bali crossroads are tenget, highly charged with supernatural power. All are thumbnails - click on them for a larger picture - and click Back to return.
