Kalevala What we know about Finnish mythology is mainly based on our national epic Kalevala and some other collections of oral tradition. Kalevala is a collage of poems collected some 150 years ago by Elias L?nnrot. It contains several mythical worldviews: stoneage myths, ideas adopted from Viking-age adventurers, Christian legends, rustic poems of the countryfolk, ideas expressed by female lyric poets and tradition passed on by witches.

There are numerous forms of mysticism. The majestic grandeur of nature evoked an intuitive awe in man and a feeling of unity. Some time in history members of the homo sapiens species began directing their attention inside themselves as they received indications of a magical and spiritual nature. In early cultures groups formed around a person who seemed through some strange play of nature be possessed with extraordinary powers and insights. Some call them medicine man, or shamans. In modern culture mysticism is seen as the practice of communion and adoration of man of his divine nature. It takes all forms, though. On this page an introduction to Javanese mysticism, the origins of which little is known as its early adherents committed little to writing.

The mythology of the Haida, like that of other tribes on the central and northern coast, is based on the epic cycle of stories about the Raven and his various exploits. The Raven is truly a trickster who liberates humankind from a clamshell, then in one story sets the universe in order, only to threaten it with chaos in the next. The Raven is the most greedy, mischievous and lecherous creature imaginable, but almost without meaning to, teaches humans the arts of living a good life.

NOTE: Oceania is a name used to designate all the islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The subdivisions of Oceania are Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, which are grouped together in accordance with the physical and cultural characteristics of the inhabitants, and the Malay Archipelago. (As defined by the United Nations, (but not in these pages), the term also includes Australia and New Zealand.) We are including Hawaii in this grouping, although geographically it is NOT in the South Pacific.

( Lits of great links and info here) Unlike the Hungarians, as far as we can tell, the peoples who would later be known as Romanians, arrived in Europe as shepherds, not warriors. They were a peaceful nomadic people, caring for their own flocks as well as the herds of others. To the many rulers of the lands in which they lived, they were simply serfs, easily overlooked. As one musicologist has noted: Hungarians dance in boots, Romanians dance in sandals. Romanians are a quiet, earthy, smiling people who have suffered much but have never been broken.

Samhain is the night when the Old King dies, and the Crone Goddess mourns him greatly during the next six weeks. The sun is at its lowest point on the horizon as measured by the ancient standing stones of Britain and Ireland, the reason the Celts chose this sabbat rather than Yule as their new year. To the ancient Celts, this holiday divided the year into two seasons, Winter and Summer. Samhain is the day on which the Celtic New Year and winter begin together, so it is a time for both beginnings and endings. It is the last of the three harvest festivals, the harvest of meat. It is also the day we honor our dead. Now, while the veil between the worlds is thinnest, those who have died in the past year and those who are to be reincarnated pass through. The doors of the sidhe-mounds are open, and neither human nor faery need any magickal passwords to come and go. Our ancestors, the blessed dead, are more accessible, more approachable during the time of the dying of the land. Samhain is a day to commune with the dead and a celebration of the eternal cycle of reincarnation.
