The town of San Francisco celebrations are relatively young, if compared to Venezia or Rio de Janeiro, but nevertheless its energy it's there to make performers and public vibrate. Parade is always the 4th Sunday of May or Memorial Weekend (thus disconnected from the catholic traditions), the parade lasts one day only and begins at Bryant & 24th at 10am. Then it heads down the Mission Street to 15th where the parade dissolves in beer and more dancing. The show continues until 6pm. Of course the celebration goes on privately after hours, but that's another story

Their origin is from the time when the key persons were the Zvon?ari, people who, at the beginning of February, dressed in skins of wild animal, wore colourful hats and had cowbells tied to their body. they would go out in the forests in groups to scare out the turkish soldiers, which dates the events to somewhere about 1511, when the last battle took place in this territory."
