The idea of organising a parade of floats to celebrate Carnival outdoors, all together along the streets, developed from some youths of the well-to-do society in February 1873 in the Caf? del Casino. Later this original event, which took place on the Sunday and Shrove Tuesday of February 1873, ripened in the Carnival of Viareggio, as it is known today; one of the most beautiful and magnificent spectacular events of the world.

( Italian Version) Carnevale comincia il giorno di Sant' Antonio Abate. Un proverbio lucano, infatti, recita "a Sant'Antuon maschere e suon" il primo segnale dell'arrivo della festa pi? colorata e divertente dell'anno ? dato dal fuoco. In quasi tutti i centri lucani il Santo dei maiali, delle mucche, delle pecore e di tutti gli animali domestici viene ricordato con l'accensione di grandi fal?. I fuochi vengono accesi nelle piazze principali e soprattutto davanti alle chiese perch? vengono benedetti dal parroco.

The Putignano Carnival can boast two records, one being, that it is one of the oldest and the other as one of the world's longest. One of the oldest because some researches have found records dating back to 26 December, 1394. Its fame as one of the longest derives from the fact that like all carnivals is ends the day of Marti Gras but starts unbelievingly the 26 December, with the multi-centennial tradition of the "Propaggine".
