We acquired the 70 plus African masks during several years of living in Western and Central African countries prior to 1986. We wish to market the entire collection, or, alternatively, ethnic groupings that may be of interest to individual collectors. Most of the masks were made in Zaire (Kuba, Pende, Salampasu, Songye, Tshokwe, Yaka, Suku, etc.). Eight of the masks are rare Kom pieces from Cameroon. Masks from Mali, Liberia, Angola and Ivory Coast are also included. The masks which we consider art objects were created for specific utilitarian purposes, as tools to facilitate cultural functions -initiation into adulthood and secret societies, ancestor worship, births, deaths, law enforcement, fertility and agricultural rites, healing and exorcism, etc. Sadly, most African countries which do have museums are without resources to preserve them. The effects of termites, fungi and other pathogens can be seen on many masks.

BASKET YAM masks (left) and WOODEN YAM masks (right) are found in the Abelam villages above the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. Men weave or carve these masks, then paint them with clay pigments or natural dyes, for decorating the largest yams at harvest ceremonies. During ceremonial displays, colorful feathers, flowers, leaves and shell money are added for beauty and power. A man's status is judged by how long he can grow these ceremonial yams, which can reach 9-12 feet

Masks, as a craft form, take us back to ancient Mexico. Even though they are reproductions transformed by time and the interpretation of each artisan, they have their origins in ritual, festive use during the pre-Hispanic period.

" Many years ago, in a city made of magic and light, a great masked ball was held. Gods and kings, heros and mystical creatures were all invited to the masquerade and on the appointed night they made their way to a grand ballroom bathed in the glow of a million fireflies. Their costumes were spun of spider's silk and mist and colored with the lights of the northern sky. On their faces they wore enchanted masks made by the elves of the sacred mountains. They danced to the music of the trees and the songs of the wind and all was happy until they learned that one very important inhabitant of the land had been overlooked."
