It was a great success. Over 7000 paying visitors saw the exhibition and a great many schoolchildren saw it free of charge. We haven't worked out quite how many children, at peak times over 260 were visiting the exhibition in a single day. The exhibition was followed on April 22nd 2000 by a parade of giants including several of the giants on display. At least another 1000 people saw the parade despite rain and wind which obliged us to reduce the duration of the parade and the number of giants taking part. Two brand new giants paraded with us, Joe from Hardyes School and Eli from Portland.

Titled "In the Presence of Spirits," the exhibit features objects that reflect the influences of the supernatural world in African traditional culture. They date from about 1850 to the mid-20th century. This is a collection that never went through the hands of dealers and this makes it somewhat special............ Exh. 2001

by Claude Rilly PARIS - If sculpture is the projection of one's thoughts into three dimensions, then the African continent has produced many of the greatest sculptors of all time, even though no single name has ever been passed down. With the permanent exhibition, which occupies three floors of the (too) little known Mus?e Dapper in Paris, we are shown not only the most riveting examples of African art, but also the most disconcerting. Disconcerting because our western minds, despite a century of contemporary art which has been concerned with decompartmentalizing and reconstructing esthetic ideals, always thirst for classifications and categories which are not possible in this context.

"In a world of endless change and complexity, the mask has offered a continuum for Native people to acknowledge our connection to the universe. Through masks we identify our humanity. Through masks we affirm celestial places that honour the moon and stars. Through masks we conquer our fear of the oceans deep. Through masks we interact with the spirit world, our final destination. " Robert Joseph, Kwakwaka'wakw Chief and Guest Curator

Masks were common throughout pre-Hispanic cultures but of particular importance to the Mexican and Aztec civilizations. They were used during religious ceremonies and today continue to be used during festivals. With a mask over their face the wearer could become someone or something else. The selection of masks Tumi has are made from clay in workshops in Mexico, following traditional pre-Hispanic techniques. They are predominantly replicas of Aztec pieces.

A selection of Mexican Masks from the collection of El Museo del Barrio, New York, has been specially chosen to accompany the Iturbide exhibition. Mexico has an unbroken tradition of mask-making reaching back more than three thousand years, when masks were used in pre-Columbian ritual, and survives today in villages of Mexico where dance is an important part of every festival. This exhibition marks the first collaborative venture between The Parrish and El Museo, which was founded in 1969 by a group of Puerto Rican educators, artists and community activists who envisioned an educational institution that would reflect the richness of their culture. El Museo is the only museum in New York city dedicated to Latin American and Latino art, and retains its strong community roots as a place of cultural pride and self-discovery.
