Drama therapy combines the aims and techniques of drama/theatre with those of psychotherapy to treat individuals in crisis and help those with special needs to expand their quality of life. New York University was the first in the country to develop an academic program leading to a Master of Arts degree in drama therapy. The program attracts theatre professionals and educators, therapists, and those working in the fields of medicine, nursing, and special education. Students come from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds to study and apprentice with the leading professionals in the creative arts therapies. Classes are small and instruction individualized. The drama therapy program has been approved by the National Association for Drama Therapy. (See also Music Therapy in this department and Art Therapy in the Department of Art and Art Professions.)

The Masked Journey with Dr. Peggy Hunt and Bea Joy Borden July 12-14 The Masked Journey with Dr. Peggy Hunt and Bea Joy Borden July 12-14 The Shaman and The Mask have been associated for millennia. Mask dancing, visions, songs and storytelling have traditionally been important components of the ceremonial life of our ancestors. Masks representing animals, nature spirits, deities and aspects of the human experience have been used in cultures throughout the world. The mask can be a powerful instrument of transformation. The Masked Journey weekend workshop is a multi-dimmensional workshop. It is about spiritual healing, creativity, expression, and receiving our highest good. We will combine mask-making, ritual, and journeying with our spirit guides to discover creative solutions to present challenges in our lives. In this workshop we will use percussion instruments (drums, rattles, click sticks), toning and other vocal sounds in rituals of transformation. We will ask for a vision of a personal mask, and will then make the masks. We will drum and dance and journey for a personal ritual to be shown in detail how your mask is to be decorated and used. On Sunday afternoon, we will do the Power Dance of The Masks. Cost of this weekend: $285.00

Submitted by Kathrine L Walker This series of mask lessons was developed for the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT which has a large mask collection. The unit was part of a Carnegie grant program at West Side Middle School in Groton, CT and my assistant Dawn Estabrooks helped me write this. The program was taught during "flex" period as an option to ping pong, sports videos and making hair scrungies. The wonderful L.D. teacher, Barbara Moran, at the school was behind it all.

The Greeks loved to go to the theatre. Plays were performed and even the poorest people were able to go. In a Greek play there was a chorus and a few actors who would play all the parts. The masks became more and more exaggerated as time went on - tragic masks got more and more horrific and comic masks more and more ridiculous

In this unit, students explore the cultural significance of masks. After recalling some of the contexts in which masks are worn in the United States-e.g., Halloween, Mardi Gras, the circus, parades, plays, or costume parties-students discuss the use of masks in stories. Students then investigate the role masks play in ceremonies and on special occasions in various African cultures. Students will see pictures of African masks online, pointing out the similarities and differences between masks of different regions.

You Will Need / Making the Masks / Using the Masks / Scenarios I use this exercise with my fourth-graders when they study Ancient Greece in Social Studies. Naturally we discuss Greek Theatre, and one of the most interesting characteristics of this form is the fact that the actors were masked. For this reason it seems natural to introduce mask work at this time, and to relate it to the Greeks. However, mask work can be used at any time in a drama curriculum, and can be just as easily tied to any of several other historical forms, including Commedia. The masks used in this lesson plan are designed to be simple to make. (They can be made in the drama classroom, ordinarily in a single period and without the help of the visual art teacher.) However, if you have more time or an art teacher who wants to get involved, there is no reason you shouldn't make more solid or elaborate masks........ Matt Buchanan
