Mask-Magic: Masks allow children to practice visual-art skills and then to combine them with movement and dramatic exploration. Dell'Arte International is based in Blue Lake, California. Offering a one-year certificate course, plus a 3-year MFA program in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre. Mask work is taught as part of the curriculum. The school works with natural masks, larval, character, and half-masks. In Summer 2013 a one-month intensive, "All the World's A Mask" was offered. I started making masks for a living back in the 90's and sold to galleries from Amercian Craft Council shows, to customers at craft shows, and at the Minnesota Renn. Festival. I have written many articles, booklets, and videos about leather sculpting, and will continue to add and offer them for sale as downloads from this site. Thanks to our modern tanners who make wonderful molding leather, and new technologies in molding and casting for pattern forms it is a lot easier to make molded leather objects than it was in the past. (1) Mystery of the Mask [March 1] The use of masks has always been a spiritual act. Traditionally, for instance, Carnival ran from immediately following Christmas to its climax just before Ash Wednesday, on the threshold to Lent. In this workshop you will be introduced to the historical and theological significance of masks. While exploring the spirit of Carnival you will also create your own mask. Cost: $85. [$90. after Feb. 8] (2) Power of the Mask [April 12] Masks are experiencing a revival in western civilization because no other inanimate object is so universally successful in riveting the attention, stimulating the imagination and arousing deep emotions. Bring your Lenten time to a close and prepare for Easter by exploring the transformational power of playing with Commedia dell'Arte and Neutral Masks. Commedia dell'Arte was a popular form of improvised street theatre which originated in Italy in the 16th century and subsequently influenced Shakespeare, Moliere and others. Explore your imagination with a series of exercises, games, meditations and discussions. (Comfortable clothing is recommended.)

The MASK PERFORMANCE, uses a selection of masks to show the contrasting styles of Tragedy and Comedy as performed in the ancient theatres of Greece and Rome. Scenes of two classic tales introduce the audience to the Gods, Heroes and Monsters of myth and legend. - After learning some of the secrets of mask theatre, members of the audience can try on masks and costumes themselves, and take on the guise of a great comedian or tragic hero!

The Greeks loved to go to the theatre. Plays were performed and even the poorest people were able to go. In a Greek play there was a chorus and a few actors who would play all the parts. The masks became more and more exaggerated as time went on - tragic masks got more and more horrific and comic masks more and more ridiculous

In the Summer term 2001, we held a whole school art exhibition. Children's art work was displayed in classrooms and around the school, and parents and visitors were invited to look round. In the hall, we arranged to have a framed piece of art by every child on display - parents were able to purchase, for a small fee, their own child's art work.
