3 photos These ogoh-ogoh paraded, along with about 20 others, in Ubud on New Year's Eve, 2001. Balinese New Year's Day is calculated according to the lunar calendar and was on 25 March 2001. The parade begins at the south end of Monkey Forest Road and travels the whole length of the road to the main Ubud crossroads. It is an exciting time. The Nahua-speaking people of Guerrero, Mexico, used masks like this in rain-petitioning ceremonies, records of which date back to 1804. If rain had not fallen by May 3, twelve boys would dance to a cave, wearing masks to impersonate the Tlaloques, the Aztec rain gods believed to be dwarves living inside the mountains. The mask's blue-green eyes, along with its rippling hair and beard, are ancient symbols for water.
