A large 'tiger' mask from Guerrero, used in the tiger pageant. The mask is made of wood and leather and is decorated with animal hair and ferocious-looking animal teeth. The eyes are made with circular mirrors. The ears and tongue are made out of leather. The mask covers the head of the dancer and is worn with a costume decorated with tiger spots

"We've all grown up on school outings to museums where we've seen masks, clinically hidden behind glass. I wanted to be a part of a process that was breathing life back into them. New Guinea is one of the last places on the planet where the masks still do dance, they are still alive, breathing, full of spirits. They still dance." Photographer and writer Chris Rainier spent more than 10 years documenting the vanishing Stone Age cultures of New Guinea.
