In the present state of Vera Cruz on the Gulf of Mexico and surrounded by the states of Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Puebla, Hidalgo and San Lu?s Potos?, great Pre-Columbian cultures thrived. Among these cultures are the Olmeca, the Huasteca and the Totonaca. It is believed these cultures began 100 years B.C.. Huge and elaborate ceremonial centers were constructed for the many ceremonies that were customary for these cultures. One such ceremony is still one of the most famous in all of Mexico, known as "The Flight of the Papantlaco", performed to implore the Natural Forces to bring rain for healthy crops. The Spanish Conquest reached this area in 1518 headed by Juan of Grijalva. The City of Vera Cruz was founded a year later by Hernan Cortes. Upon achieving Independence, Mexico maintained Vera Cruz with all of it's rich history and heritage. This area is one of the richest archeological sights for lovers of Pre-Columbian art and history. This mask is a replica of the many masks used by the Totonaca and other cultures of that era. Measures 12" high x 11" wide.
