Although unknown in ancient Mexico, devils are part of festivities in many regions of the country. Smiling, friendly and entertaining devils are also common. Shown here are participants in the competition called 'masquerade of the devils' (Mojiganga de los diablos), held yearly on September 16th in the village of Teloloapan, Guerrero. Prizes are given for the most impressive mask and the best performance.

Devil mask made of wood, leather cloth and wool. It has two large red goat horns and has snakes protruding from the forehead, cheeks and mouth, an eagle-head nose, wool hair and a furry cloth that goes over the wearer's head. The bright colors and the multiplicity of figures resembles certain masks made in the Orient

This handmade, paper m?che, Panamanian ceremonial mask is the head of a dragon painted in fiercely bright colors. The mask was created in Panama City near the ruins of the Camino Real. A great gift for anyone who is brave enough to stand up to the dragon!
