Sally Thielen, a Chippewa artist, strives to create ?Art with harmony and balance of ancient and contemporary ideas?. These magnificent Raku Porcelain masks are striking portraits of individual native americans. Sally achieves the nearly iridescent sheen of the mask by using many glazes which she than dramatically contrasts with the dark matte finish of the unpainted ?skin?.

( site in norwegianBruk ) (The use og grotesque masks and faces on buildings has a long and interesting history. In Pre - Christianity a scary mask were meant to keep evil spirits away from the house. This detail has survived all over Europe, and is still this day in use. Here is a place to purchase such decorative details for your building ) Bruken av groteske masker og ansikter p? bygninger har en lang og interessant historie.

My interest in masks began when I was quite young and just becoming interested in cultures other than my own. As an adult, international studies and travels to Africa and the South Pacific connected me to the mask as a unique tribal totem and cemented my fascination with their often primitive nature. With my own masks, I try to replicate that tone, through the use of organic materials, recycled and found objects, plant fibers and horse hair.

A degree in Textiles and Design in Rhode Island has taken many turns and paths -- fashion writing for a national magazine in NYC, clothing designing in San Francisco Bay Area, furniture design and interiors in Western Canada, house murals in Nova Scotia and Toronto, and theatre work on both sides of the border. Now a resident of The Beaches, mask-making is my focus. The masks are plaster gauze base, built with clay, painted and urethaned. They are meant for wall display and interior art as well as to be worn in play. One needs not to go to Carnival or Mardi Gras, to Venezia, Rio, or New Orleans to don a mask and frolic and provoke!

Metalmasks With emphasis from primitive to high technology and engaging ancient and contemporary imagery, I create three dimensional works of art with an abstract compositional awareness. Applying familiar organic and industrial materials - steel, copper, brass, feathers, bones, beads, yarn, paint and glass - my mixed media constructions combine elements of sculpture, painting and collage. My vision: to take altered old, discarded materials and create fine art that arouses emotion, thought, discussion and interaction.

a Step by Step guide to creating your own Life Mask! Welcome! I've created this site because I've discovered that so many people, like me, are absolutely fascinated with masks. This site is a kind of "e-guide" that will lead your easily and successfully through both the technical steps (it's easy-really I promise!) as well as some of the more profound therapeutic applications and soulful self-discovery that can be realized by making your own (or another's) Life-Mask. For starters you might want to take a look at About Masks and a few Examples of Self-Masks? or, if you're ready to dive in and get started, you can just jump right in to Making a Face Mask and let your Self-Mask begin! I offer Mask Making Workshops, and I Create Commissioned Life Portrait Sculptures of people using the life casting as a mold for a ceramic or bronze finished piece...

Back in the late 1970's, the influence of Planet of the Apes, Rick Baker's King Kong, and Star Wars inspired many of the members of this group to start experimenting with acting, make-up, props, and costumes. The discovery of science fiction conventions in the LA and San Francisco areas lead us to assemble the Merry Monkeytime Players several times per year for weekends of fun and debauchery. Reuniting for John Chambers' 75th birthday party in '97 brought back all the fun, childhood memories, and inspiration that led us all in creative career directions. The Players of APEMANIA come from all walks of life. Some of us are actors, some are artists, all of us love Planet of the Apes. Here's a look at who we are with and without make-up. Click on the characters for each performer's own unique story

Hanging from a wall in my grade seven art teacher's classroom, was a mask woven with Jute. As soon I saw it, I had to learn how to make it. After a little coaxing, Mr. Stumm agreed to show me how to weave my first mask. And so began my love affair with masks. For the past 10 years, I have been experimenting with and producing both woven and papier mach? masks. What started out as a hobby, has now become the focus of my life. However, like many crafters, I need a day job to sustain my existence. This means I can't spend as much time as I'd like experimenting and perfecting my craft. However, if I am able to share what I have accomplished with people who love masks, I will be a satisfied artist.

ALEXIS SEEPO has traveled to the far corners of the earth studying metaphysics, indigenous cultures, ancient and modern myths, legends, and media. Her search led to the creation of GYPSY RENAISSANCE over 25 years ago. Ms. Seepo uses a collage technique in the development of her designs. Using specially selected feathers, stones, sequins, beads and trimmings, she allows their colors and textures to mix together naturally. Her creations are wearable works of art, and may also be displayed as wall hangings.
