" "Swaps" are a wonderful way to build a collection. Artists create a number of pieces which are mailed to the organizer--known as the "Swapmeister". Each artist's pieces are distributed among the participants, so that while you send in the required number of items of your own making, you get back one from each participant--and they in turn get one of yours. So, with a group of ten artists, each will end up with one of their own items, and nine other pieces........."

With my mask making I'm able to express, transform, ritualize and explore my personal and spiritual life journey. I hope that the emotional and spiritual expression of my masks appeals to the humanness of us all, and that you will enjoy them.

My interest in masks began when I was quite young and just becoming interested in cultures other than my own. As an adult, international studies and travels to Africa and the South Pacific connected me to the mask as a unique tribal totem and cemented my fascination with their often primitive nature. With my own masks, I try to replicate that tone, through the use of organic materials, recycled and found objects, plant fibers and horse hair.

The imagination holds millions of wonderfully complex and simple spirits who are always ready and willing to help us learn more about who we really are. I honor these spirits by giving them clothes, faces, and bodies to move around in. The gifts they have given me in return are priceless. I invite you to honor your imaginary selves and open to the inner wisdom your creativity will reveal to you. My inner spirits invite your inner spirits to come out and play. The answers to the universe lie within your own heart. -- Lucretia

Artist Jeffrey Zigulis began his Dream Masks series as presents for schoolmates of his four-year-old son, Matthew. Zigulis told the children that the masks could help scare away bad dreams. One little boy is careful to see that his baby brother has his mask nearby whenever he?s sleeping. Something about the masks--which were inspired by African, Mexican, and Micronesia masks- resonates for most people who see them, so Zigulis began making groups of masks and showing them with his other ceramic work. With each group he makes, the series changes: some groups are whimsical, other are dramatic and powerful. Over the past few years, Zigulis has dedicated all of his studio time to the creation of masks. Each clay mask is scraped, carved and burnished before it is painted with acrylics and accented with colored-wire hair. The color combinations used are influenced by Joseph Albers? Color Theories. The evolution of the colors Zigulis uses are inspired by snorkeling trips to Molokai, and an interest in the colors and patterns that appear on the wings of butterflies and moths. Acrylics and pearlized airbrush paints are used as stains and solid colors that create depth and accent the texture of the fired clay. Best known for his Black Raku pots with bamboo and for his Dancing Man series, Zigulis characteristically moves traditional forms and methods in new directions, to produce styles that are uniquely his own. Zigulis has been very involved in projects with the art community, locally and nationally. Sold through many fine galleries and juried craft shows, his ceramics can be found in MUSEUMS, CORPORATIONS, PRIVATE COLLECTIONS AROUND THE WORLD. 10-D 22" $340 SOLD Something about the masks--which were inspired by African, Mexican, and Micronesia masks- resonates for most people who see them, so Zigulis began making groups of masks and showing them with his other ceramic work. Lorra Lee Rose, from the Olympic Rain Forest in Washington state, is a modern day mask maker. Her creations, combining an array of exotic, moulted feathers, are stunning works of art. She chooses feathers selected for visual quality and places them one at a time, creating each design with its own distinct personality. Her appreciation for the beauty inherent in nature is obvious. These masks are decorative wall pieces and are wearable as well.

The artwork I make is about history, myth, storytelling, religion, relationships, ceremony, civilization and humor. I am interested in the language of gesture, expression, texture, form and color. Through my work I am able to contribute to the long tradition of the artist as teacher, recorder and seer. The life of an artist is as important and meaningful as any in society.............

A degree in Textiles and Design in Rhode Island has taken many turns and paths -- fashion writing for a national magazine in NYC, clothing designing in San Francisco Bay Area, furniture design and interiors in Western Canada, house murals in Nova Scotia and Toronto, and theatre work on both sides of the border. Now a resident of The Beaches, mask-making is my focus. The masks are plaster gauze base, built with clay, painted and urethaned. They are meant for wall display and interior art as well as to be worn in play. One needs not to go to Carnival or Mardi Gras, to Venezia, Rio, or New Orleans to don a mask and frolic and provoke!

Hanging from a wall in my grade seven art teacher's classroom, was a mask woven with Jute. As soon I saw it, I had to learn how to make it. After a little coaxing, Mr. Stumm agreed to show me how to weave my first mask. And so began my love affair with masks. For the past 10 years, I have been experimenting with and producing both woven and papier mach? masks. What started out as a hobby, has now become the focus of my life. However, like many crafters, I need a day job to sustain my existence. This means I can't spend as much time as I'd like experimenting and perfecting my craft. However, if I am able to share what I have accomplished with people who love masks, I will be a satisfied artist.

( site in norwegianBruk ) (The use og grotesque masks and faces on buildings has a long and interesting history. In Pre - Christianity a scary mask were meant to keep evil spirits away from the house. This detail has survived all over Europe, and is still this day in use. Here is a place to purchase such decorative details for your building ) Bruken av groteske masker og ansikter p? bygninger har en lang og interessant historie.
