"I was born in 1946 in Ancash, Peru. I am a self-taught artist, dedicating myself to ceramics and craftmaking since my youth. I specialize in masks influenced by the Vicus, Mochica, and Nazca cultures. I focus largely on the mix of form and color, and despite a lack of formal training I have created a unique, personal style. I try to always remember my roots, while also learning from my readings and travels.

" Imagine an island where all the earth?s reusable items wash upon it?s shore, and from that incredible resource emerge a race of creatures who create their own culture, royal court and deities. Santa Cruz artist, Rhan Wilson has not only imagined such a place, but has created many of its inhabitants as well, all from materials that he realized were still too useful to have simply thrown away. Rhan calls these creations ?Castaways", their Gods ?Jugheads?, and has brought them together for you in this art exhibit entitled,"From the Temple of Castaway Island."

NOVICA ARTISTS 'Iguanas,' mask The mesmerizing yualawuye (blue) tone of this hand-crafted mask results in a background of mystical impact, accentuating the verdant spirit of iguanas on the cheeks and forehead. Says the artisan, "I like for my masks to have animals on them in order to earn their blessing." Orange wildflowers complete the organic Huichol sentiment of the composition.

NOVICA ARTIST "Hello, I am Ismael Diaz. I was born in Mexico City and when I was very young we came to live in Tonala. At seven years of age I began to work with a man who made serving dishes, and there I emptied the kaolin for the sets. From there I went to work in a ceramic dish factory where they taught me to mold and paint. When I got married, I began to work ceramics with my wife on the ranch, and now one of our children has begun to help us. In my family, we are all dedicated to handicrafts; my father worked with clay and he taught me much more than I learned in the jobs that I had. "First I collect the clay nearby and I begin to knead it. I place it in molds that I made from plaster and allow it to dry for two or three days. At that point I fire the piece and later paint it, executing an oxidized finish with paints for cement and several earthen baths to achieve that rugged finish. We need about one week to finish a lot of thirty masks.

My masks are made from acrylic that I recycle from the scrap bin of a local plastic store. I use a variety of opaque and transparent colors that I mold and paint. I am inspired by masks of various cultures, and I blend this inspiration with my own interpretation of each mask?s final form.

The imagination holds millions of wonderfully complex and simple spirits who are always ready and willing to help us learn more about who we really are. I honor these spirits by giving them clothes, faces, and bodies to move around in. The gifts they have given me in return are priceless. I invite you to honor your imaginary selves and open to the inner wisdom your creativity will reveal to you. My inner spirits invite your inner spirits to come out and play. The answers to the universe lie within your own heart. -- Lucretia

( site in norwegianBruk ) (The use og grotesque masks and faces on buildings has a long and interesting history. In Pre - Christianity a scary mask were meant to keep evil spirits away from the house. This detail has survived all over Europe, and is still this day in use. Here is a place to purchase such decorative details for your building ) Bruken av groteske masker og ansikter p? bygninger har en lang og interessant historie. Metalmasks With emphasis from primitive to high technology and engaging ancient and contemporary imagery, I create three dimensional works of art with an abstract compositional awareness. Applying familiar organic and industrial materials - steel, copper, brass, feathers, bones, beads, yarn, paint and glass - my mixed media constructions combine elements of sculpture, painting and collage. My vision: to take altered old, discarded materials and create fine art that arouses emotion, thought, discussion and interaction.

NOVICA ARTIST Jaime Zapata Espinoza, born in Lima in 1953, is dedicated to a very interesting craft-- creating masks inspired by his profound Peruvian roots. Made with loving patience, each mask is unique and can express every feeling in the human heart, from happiness to deep sorrow. "I'm an architect, but since I was young I've dedicated a part of my time to the handcrafting of masks. The objective of my work is to transmit human emotions in seemingly animated objects. I use recycled paper and textiles, cans, and some vegetal elements like rushes. Colors are given with natural oxides and earths. For decorating my pieces I also use hand-woven elements with Inca motifs. Each mask is cast with milled paper, dried and finished by hand in elaborating the particular characteristics of a human face in a specific expression. Each piece is unique, and some of them have an aged appearance achieved with a layer of patina. Some masks have rushes and tresses made of fiber ropes. The final step is a layer of lacquer for protecting the pigments.

Unique artist. Unusual maskart. "Over the years, metal sheet, wood and flint furniture become big masks and weathercocks: installations in nature done with corrugated irons worn by the time, with flint and rough wood. Through installations of flints, metal sheets, rubber, and steel, between fire and wind, Nicolas Sersiron seeks to create this gap with the reality which opens on imaginary and emotional adventure. The path?s track is visible, the destination remains unknown? "

NOVICA ARTIST "I came into contact with bamboo and its varied techniques thanks to my teacher, Ripper, when I was studying Industrial Design at Rio de Janeiro's Pontifнcia Universidade Catуlica. Bamboo is an ideal material, all its fibers are longitudinal which enables the hand-crafting of resistant pieces. Whereas wood takes up to 60 years before it can be used, bamboo grows in six years and from every stalked removed, two more sprout. Its is an abundant prime material, renewable, that does not promote floor erosion. "
