Debra Wuliger brings a wide variety of experiences to YAGC. For the past eight years, Debra has created puppets, floats, and batik banners for the Cleveland Museum of Art's annual Parade the Circle. In addition to her puppetry work, Debra has a studio in her home where she paints both on paper and silk. She exhibits regularly in greater Cleveland.

"Each of my masks is hand made with great attention to detail and construction, making them as comfortable to wear as they are enjoyable to look at. They are formed over a wire rimmed, vinyl base that stays slightly fexible around the edges, alowing them to fit a wide variety of face shapes. They are then decorated with feathers, fabric and floral leaves. Eyes, noses and beaks are made of a light-wieght, air drying modelling material, then sealed with paper-mache, acryilcs and polyurethane."

Elkhana Masks designs and creates original masks for artistic, dramatic and ritual purposes. Some of the masks are wearable, some are meant only to be viewed. They are usually made from papier mache, clay, or plaster, then painted and adorned with a variety of decorations. Below are examples of my masks. Lorra Lee Rose, from the Olympic Rain Forest in Washington state, is a modern day mask maker. Her creations, combining an array of exotic, moulted feathers, are stunning works of art. She chooses feathers selected for visual quality and places them one at a time, creating each design with its own distinct personality. Her appreciation for the beauty inherent in nature is obvious. These masks are decorative wall pieces and are wearable as well.

NOVICA ARTIST "In our ceramics we express the daily customs of the Andean villages, as they are the true face of Peru, with their happiness and their beliefs." Feriberto Aylas, born in La Quinua, Ayacucho in 1965, is an artisan dedicated to ceramics. He has established a family community in this activity where he works alongside his relatives. He has his own style oriented toward the expression of the customs of the Andean people.

Fernando Luis Perez is an mask maker artist who has been honing his skill and style for over 20 years. He started learning mask making art at age 8 from Leonardo Pagan, a master mask-maker who learned from the original 18th century master, Don Juan Careta. He is an artist who has both enhanced and challenged mask making art by letting his spirit and artistic magic evolve into new versions of mask art that go beyond the established. "No se puede limitar su imaginacion artistica cuando no tiene limites", Fernando explains ("You cannot limit imagination since it has no limits").

Masks and mask making have held a fascination and attraction for Gerri since she began making and collecting them in the mid seventies. Today, Gerri makes masks, which focus on her expressive arts work. Although Gerri?s formal education lies in Theater Arts and Communications fields, she completed course work and holds a certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy. This work utilizes various expressive arts modalities such as painting, sand tray work, mask making, dance therapy and playback theater. Using a wide variety of materials including fabric, paint, natural fibers, wood, metals and found objects, Gerri?s imbues her masks with symbols, images and icons of a universal nature. Their appeal crosses gender and culture. Personal Philosophy: With my mask making, I?m able to express, transform, ritualize and explore my personal and spiritual life journey. Their emotional and spiritual expression appeals to the humanness of us all.

NOVICA ARTIST "Hello, I am Ismael Diaz. I was born in Mexico City and when I was very young we came to live in Tonala. At seven years of age I began to work with a man who made serving dishes, and there I emptied the kaolin for the sets. From there I went to work in a ceramic dish factory where they taught me to mold and paint. When I got married, I began to work ceramics with my wife on the ranch, and now one of our children has begun to help us. In my family, we are all dedicated to handicrafts; my father worked with clay and he taught me much more than I learned in the jobs that I had. "First I collect the clay nearby and I begin to knead it. I place it in molds that I made from plaster and allow it to dry for two or three days. At that point I fire the piece and later paint it, executing an oxidized finish with paints for cement and several earthen baths to achieve that rugged finish. We need about one week to finish a lot of thirty masks.

NOVICA ARTIST Jaime Zapata Espinoza, born in Lima in 1953, is dedicated to a very interesting craft-- creating masks inspired by his profound Peruvian roots. Made with loving patience, each mask is unique and can express every feeling in the human heart, from happiness to deep sorrow. "I'm an architect, but since I was young I've dedicated a part of my time to the handcrafting of masks. The objective of my work is to transmit human emotions in seemingly animated objects. I use recycled paper and textiles, cans, and some vegetal elements like rushes. Colors are given with natural oxides and earths. For decorating my pieces I also use hand-woven elements with Inca motifs. Each mask is cast with milled paper, dried and finished by hand in elaborating the particular characteristics of a human face in a specific expression. Each piece is unique, and some of them have an aged appearance achieved with a layer of patina. Some masks have rushes and tresses made of fiber ropes. The final step is a layer of lacquer for protecting the pigments.

Artist Jeffrey Zigulis began his Dream Masks series as presents for schoolmates of his four-year-old son, Matthew. Zigulis told the children that the masks could help scare away bad dreams. One little boy is careful to see that his baby brother has his mask nearby whenever he?s sleeping. Something about the masks--which were inspired by African, Mexican, and Micronesia masks- resonates for most people who see them, so Zigulis began making groups of masks and showing them with his other ceramic work. With each group he makes, the series changes: some groups are whimsical, other are dramatic and powerful. Over the past few years, Zigulis has dedicated all of his studio time to the creation of masks. Each clay mask is scraped, carved and burnished before it is painted with acrylics and accented with colored-wire hair. The color combinations used are influenced by Joseph Albers? Color Theories. The evolution of the colors Zigulis uses are inspired by snorkeling trips to Molokai, and an interest in the colors and patterns that appear on the wings of butterflies and moths. Acrylics and pearlized airbrush paints are used as stains and solid colors that create depth and accent the texture of the fired clay. Best known for his Black Raku pots with bamboo and for his Dancing Man series, Zigulis characteristically moves traditional forms and methods in new directions, to produce styles that are uniquely his own. Zigulis has been very involved in projects with the art community, locally and nationally. Silver jewelry interpretations of masks from different cultures Says Jessica : "I was always been fascinated by masks, even as a child. I've traveled and seen a lot, studied native images. I have a special feeling for how to transpose these images into jewelry. I believe in staying on my own path, even if it is different. I see concepts in nature and the arts and transform them into wearable art. Inspired by the area she lives in, Jessica created the "Wine Designs" series, made especially for wine lovers.

John McCuistion has been working as an artist, using clay as the primary medium of expression, for over thirty years. He completed his undergraduate studies at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California and earned an M.F.A. in 1973 from the University of Montana, Missoula, working under Rudy Autio. John has been teaching at the University of Puget Sound since 1976 and holds the rank of full Professor.
