"I have been building masks and puppets since 1996, and sculpting and drawing since I was old enough to hold a crayon. I love creating visual art with almost every medium, but things like mask-making and puppetry are particularly fascinating to me as they bring art into that magical dimension of time and movement."

Nepal is a country at the crossroads between India and Tibet and thus the forms of worship found there contain elements of Indian Vedic and Tantric Hinduism as well as Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan Bon (animism). The diminutive Nepalese "masks" shown here are small papier mache hangings meant to be placed on walls, especially above or beside doors and windows, to invoke the aid of popular Hindu deities. In the style typical of Tibetan and Nepalese tantric hagiography, they are all wearing elaborate pointed crowns and displaying their open third eyes.

( SCROLL DOWN PAGE TO GET TO THE MASKS ) Borucan craftsman have for centuries created elaborately carved balsa and cedar masks as essential accoutrements of the festival. They originally depicted jaguars, mountain pigs, mythological and ancestral figures (personajes y los antepasados). As resistance to the Conquest grew, the character of the ritual and the masks changed to include ghoulish devils, which is of course a European idea, bearded Spaniards, mules, horses, blacks (from contact with slaves) and, importantly, the bull as the symbol of the Conquest

The Egyptians believed that death was simply a temporary interruption, rather than complete cessation, of life, and that eternal life could be ensured by means like piety to the gods, preservation of the physical form through Mummification, and the provision of statuary and other funerary equipment. Each human consisted of the physical body, the 'ka', the 'ba', and the 'akh'. The Name and Shadow were also living entities. To enjoy the afterlife, all these elements had to be sustained and protected from harm

"In what has developed into a personal journey of rediscovery of his own cultural heritage, the 32 year old Schweig has accelerated and carried his art to new heights. Corroborating with renowned West Coast painter and master carver Art Thompson of the Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth nations, Schweig has created his own, "intensely personal" series of Adoption Masks. Born from the tragic victimization he experienced at the hands of abusive adoptive parents, the Adoption Masks - titled Inuit Man Screaming - are powerful, expressively carved images of the human spirit; beautifully married elements of aesthetic beauty and vivid expressions of pain. Influenced by the artistic style of Indonesia and inspired by a child?s suffering, the masks are dedicated to all who have been uprooted from their culture and tragically victimized" (from the website - go downpage to view maskgallery )

The Tshechu is a festival honouring Guru Padmasambhava, "one who was born from a lotus flower." This Indian saint contributed enormously to the diffusion of Tantric Buddhism in the Himalayan regions of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan etc. around 800 AD. He is the founder of the Nyingmapa, the "old school" of Lamaism which still has numerous followers. The biography of Guru is highlighted by 12 episodes of the model of the Buddha Shakyamuni?s life. Each episode is commemorated around the year on the 10th day of the month by "the Tschechu". The dates and the duration of the festivals vary from one district to another but they always take place on or around the 10th day of the month according to the Bhutanese calendar. During Tshechus, the dances are performed by monks as well as by laymen. The Tshechu is a religious festival and by attending it, it is believed one gains merits. It is also a yearly social gathering where the people, dressed in all their finery, come together to rejoice.

? Azur & les A?roplanes ?, a theatre company founded by visual artist Patricia Gattepaille, has chosen to explore the infinite and extraordinary territories of the Mask. Why the Mask ? What the genius of mankind has invented to celebrate the gods and nature, Mourn the dead, glorify the living, laugh, provoke awe or admiration, educate, celebrate Love, solemnise meetings, mock, recite poetry, cure? All this has been done by calling on the Mask.. In theatre, the Mask is a sculpture as much as it is a character. One does not wear a Mask thoughtlessly but with lightness and precision. Wearing a Mask involves bringing into play one?s own humanity. Restoring the Mask?s spectacular place at the heart of life. Participating in the understanding of the world?s cultures through the Mask. ? Azur & les A?roplanes ? pursues these two objectives through various activities : mask making on commission, training courses for professionals, exhibitions, shows, creative workshops for all. We will mask them all ! Just to clear things up?

Rebirth African art and craft. South Africa. Fine resource! "For thousands of years, rituals and masking ceremonies were an integral part of African life. The gradual, effects of parceled out African territories to Colonial governments, and the ensuing damage to traditional economies. followed by, the displacement of huge quantities of people, by colonialism, resulted in economies and food production systems being wrecked. Africans have lost some of its tribal identity and culture, masking ceremonies are no longer common place in Africa"

By Susan Cochrane In the Torres Strait Islands there are no art schools and art galleries like on mainland Australia. Many cultural objects are created and enjoyed for local purposes. Dance costumes and accessories are among the most important and distinctive creations of Torres Strait Islander culture. Some of the earliest known examples are the magnificent articulated turtleshell masks, such as those collected by the 1898 Cambridge Expedition to the Torres Strait, which are acknowledged treasures of the Torres Strait people's cultural and artistic heritage.

Among the most colorful and fascinating of these festivals were the masked dance ceremonies known as Tsam. These ceremonies, introduced in the eighteenth century, were held around the New Year with the purpose of destroying the evil that had accrued during the past year. Performed by monks, the characters portrayed in the dances included a wide variety of terrifying deities from the Lamaist pantheon. Today, however, in newly independent Mongolia Tsam ceremonies are once again being performed.

Xothique Designs' exclusive masks are hand crafted in leather and papier mâché using traditional techniques by experienced UK mask maker Helen Rich, aka 'Xothique' (or 'Zothique'). Styles range from traditional theatre costume and masquerade masks inspired by the Venetian Carnevale to more exotic gothic and fantasy themes popular at Halloween and Faerie-themed events. Some, such as the popular Welsh Red Dragon mask, are truly unique — similar mouldings can be created, but no two masks will ever be identical. Others, like these party masks, are kept as permanent moulds, and can be decorated to meet your requirements. Xothique Designs masks are all entirely hand-made by the artist — you will find no plastic, card or ready-made mask forms here. You can buy Helen's masquerade masks direct from the Xothique Designs shop. If you have a specific design in mind, please check out Helen's commissions page, and get in touch to discuss your ideas.

"This is a very old method of "painting" that can be dated as far back as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Heated coloured wax is applied hot to a surface in a series of layers. It's recent revival is due to a strong Dutch interest in encaustic art. The major practitioners being based in the Netherlands. On the web there are some very informative sites. For those who have some tired old masks this may be just the method to employ in search of their renovation. Indeed, with wax you could look forward to changing your mask collection with the colour of the seasons." Dave Riley,Australia

I'm a Canadian artist of mainly Italian descent. I come from a multi-cultural family of creative, self-taught artists with many natural talents. My parents and paternal grandparents were fashion designers. A self-taught artist myself, my artwork includes a broad range of mediums from fine art paintings and murals to pen and ink cartoon illustrations. However, I prefer to express my creativity mainly through my hand painted, mask-shaped sculptures using techniques I developed myself. I love writing stories about the subjects that inspire me and I'm forever experimenting and combining all sorts of materials that I incorporate in my creations. I also enjoy playing with photos of my artwork and creating new images with my digital skills that I then offer as art prints on canvas that you can order online on my website. I have a degree in Urban Economic Geography from McGill University and I worked in many fields: as a commercial artist in an advertising firm, a talk show host for CHIN Radio and Television in Toronto, a mediator for landlord and tenant disputes at the Ontario Residential Tenancy Commission, a cartographic toponymist and then a compensation policy analyst at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. After leaving my career in the public service, I moved to the province of British Columbia where I exhibited my artwork in both private and public galleries as well as in a Canadian museum where I had a solo show for 3 months. My husband and I owned and operated Dreamscapes Gift Gallery, an award winning gift gallery for 15 years (where I also sold my artwork). My original mask sculptures, paintings and art prints on canvas are in numerous private collections in North America, Europe, Russia and Australia. I also created and published an art book entitled:"On the Face of the Waters".

Photos of masks, costumes, ceremonies, sacred dances. Among the tribes portayed are Hopi, Zuni, Tewa. The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis is one of the most significant and controversial representations of traditional American Indian culture ever produced. Issued in a limited edition from 1907-1930, the publication continues to exert a major influence on the image of Indians in popular culture. Curtis said he wanted to document "the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies, his life and manners." In over 2000 photogravure plates and narrative, Curtis portrayed the traditional customs and lifeways of eighty Indian tribes. Sensitive Images and Text This online collection contains all of the images and caption text as originally published in The North American Indian. The captions reflect a perspective that Indians were "primitive" people whose traditional cultures and ways of life were disappearing. In his representation of Indians as the "vanishing race," Curtis echoes the prevailing view held by Euro-Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Contemporary readers should interpret the captions in that context. Some captions and images portray ceremonial rituals and objects that were not intended for viewing by the uninitiated. No images have been excluded or specially labeled. They are included in this digital collection in order to represent the work fully

A positive plaster mould of the intended mask will be carved onto a wooden block. Over this block leather will be stretched, beaten and smoothed to create a performance mask. As part of this workshop there will be readings from Dante's "Divine Comedy" and various other Italian cultural delights. Please enjoy the processes involved in the fine art of leather mask making. Masks have been used throughout the history of theatre. They were a significant part of the the Western World's first professional theatre, the Commedia dell' Arte, which developed in Italy in the 16th Century.

Article. Jakarta Post Initially, the giant dolls, popularly known as ogoh-ogoh, were created as the symbol of demonic spirits. In the Ngerupuk ritual, a sort of exorcism ritual taking place the night before Nyepi, the ogoh-ogoh are paraded around the village area to ward off any evil spirits. In the parade, the ogoh-ogoh is accompanied by hundreds of screaming people carrying torches, striking gongs or manipulating any sound-producing implements available in an apparent attempt to scare away the demons. At the end of the ritual, the ogoh-ogoh is usually taken to the village's main intersection and set on fire......
