The masked play of Kosong Village in South Kyongsan Province is known as ?Okwangdae? or ?Five Clowns Play.? Taking the stage to perform a masked play- consisting of drama, dance and song-the five clowns represent the five cardinal directions of east, west, south, north and the center. It is difficult to determine exactly when this form of masked play came into being, but it is believed that it initially began to be performed around the 10th century and became established as a distinctive form of entertainment in the middle of the 18th century. A description of it can be found in an ancient historical source which was revised in 1530 AD.
